100% muscle-powered with no locking mechanisms, Hawaiian Slings fall into the “Primitive Gear” classification and are legal to use in “No Speargun Mechanism” management areas such as the Bahamas. Hawaiian Slings are also effective at longer ranges than a polespear and can be outfitted with additional accessories like reels for larger game fish.

These classic Hawaiian Slings were used by the modern founders of spearfishing, like the legendary Pinder Family of Miami in the 50’s and 60’s. So proficient were Art and his brothers that on September 5, 1955, they were featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated Magazine. Art was even credited as landing the first-ever billfish with a spear, using a Hawaiian Sling shot that cracked the spine of a sailfish taller than him.

These classic Hawaiian Slings by HammerHead Spearguns still make effective spearfishing gear. Fish caught with a Hawaiian Sling qualify under “Primitive Gear Records” managed by IUSA. As noted, “Primitive Gear” means any speargun or pole spear that does NOT have a mechanism and MUST be held by the spearfisher’s arm strength.
